The previous name of the city is Icel. Turkey is an important province and four districts are located in the center. It has the feature of being the tenth most crowded city in the country. As of 2019, it has a population of approximately 2 million. Akdeniz, Yenişehir, Toroslar, and Mezitli are the four districts in the center. Mersin ship harbors are an important building in the city. Important layers were obtained during the excavations in Yumuktepe, located on the north side of the city. These layers shed light on the city's history. It is known that important civilizations lived here in ancient times. It is seen that the oldest of the layers found belonged to the Seljuk period. Historical artifacts unearthed here are exhibited in the museum. 87% of the city consists of mountainous areas. This affects the economic activities of the province seriously. The city has a subtropical climate. A typical warm and temperate climate is effective. In the summer, the city is extremely hot and humid. In winter, warm and rainy weather prevails. The city has the characteristic of being the hottest part of Europe.
