Ganji Sawai

Ganji Sawai

The Ganj-i-Sawai, which means to surpass treasure, was a heavily armed merchant ship belonging to the Mughal emperor Aurangzeb. The famous ship was sent by English pirate Henry from Mocha in Yemen to Surat, India, on 7 September 1695.

The Ganj-i-Sawai reached the Every and the Fancy Mandab Strait in August 1695. The famous ship worked here alongside Thomas Tew's four pirate ships. In the Bosphorus, a 25-ship Mughal convoy heading to India fled a fleet of pirate ships. The next day, the famous pirate ship Ganj-i-Sawai and accompanying Fateh Muhammed met while crossing the strait on the road to Surat.

The Capture of the Ganj-i Sawai Ship

The famous ships Fateh Muhammed and Ganges-i-Sawai were attacked by the pirates that encountered on the road to Surat. The famous pirate Henry Every set up an ambush in the Red Sea to plunder merchant ships and treasure ships. In this ambush, the famous pirate Every caught the escort ship, Fateh Muhammed.

The pirate ships first attacked the famous ship, Fateh Mohammed. Captain Tew, the captain of the ship, was killed in this attack. The crew of Fateh Mohammed, fearing the pirate ship Fancy's 46 guns and weakened by their previous conflict, showed little resistance.

Every's pirates looted the famous ship for £ 50,000 worth of treasure. The remaining pirate ships set sail after the famous ship Ganj-i-Sawai. The pirate ships overtook Ganj-i Sawai about eight days after the encounter at the stern.

The famous ship Ganj-i-Sawai was a fearsome opponent. The famous merchant ship had a guard staff of four to five hundred, armed with 62 guns and rifles. Also, the ship was capable of six hundred passengers.

The End of the Famous Pirate Ship

Some of its artillery were killed when one of the guns of the trade ship Ganj-i-Sawai, which was in a very advantageous position, exploded. This situation caused a great deal of confusion and demoralization among the crew of the famous ship. Also, the wide edge of Every hit the enemy's main commander, and the probabilities were equalized. The pirate ship Fancy and the merchant ship Ganj-i-Sawai pulled side by side and the pirates climbed onto the ship.

The crews of the famous pirate ships that succeeded terrified their captives for several days. They raped and killed prisoners and used various methods of torture to force them to tell the location of the ships' treasury. The pirates raped the women on the ship. Some of the raped women jumped into the sea. Those who managed to survive were transported to ships freed by the pirates.

Between £ 325,000 and £ 600,000, including 500,000 pieces of gold and silver, a loot was obtained from the Ganj-i-Sawai ship. The surviving pirates set sail for Ré, and each man on their crew was given £ 1,000 and some precious stones.
