Amerigo Vespucci

Amerigo Vespucci was born in 1454 in Florence. Amerigo Vespucci is the person who gave his name to the Americas. He's an Italian sailor. Thanks to private lessons from his uncle Giorgio Antonio, he has improved his knowledge of geography and cosmology. In 1479 he went to France. He was sent to France as the representative of the Medici family. Later, he worked in the bank of this family.

In 1491, he took part in a shipping company of Medici. The company was based in Seville, Spain. He met Kristof Columbus while working for this company. In 1499, he took his first expedition with a fleet. During this trip, he traveled around Brazil, Trinidad, and Haiti. He thought that these new lands were part of the Asian continent. Vespucci made the same mistake Columbus made.

Amerigo Vespucci then tried to make a new expedition, but his request was rejected by Spain. Vespucci then began working with Portugal. Vespucci, who was assigned to collect detailed information about the coasts of Brazil, went on his second expedition in 1501. He went to investigate the relationship of the Brazilian coast with the land found by Spain. On his second expedition, he realized that the South American territories he traveled to were not Asian. He named this land "New World" in his letters. His 1501 expedition was completed in 1502 and returned to Lisbon at the end of this year.

Amerigo Vespucci took a new trip in 1503. He had to return before he could complete this trip. The weather was extremely stormy, which led to the early discovery. Two years later, in 1505, he returned to the service of Spain. After entering the service of Spain, he settled in Seville. In 1508, he was awarded the title of chief pilot. Since then, he has contributed to the training of new seafarers and to mapping the discovered places. In a geography book published in France in 1507, South America was named after Amerigo Vespucci.

Although Amerigo Vespucci has appeared in two of his letters, which he made four trips to the United States, his only two voyages are confirmed by other sources. It is claimed that Vespucci did not make another expedition to America except for 2 trips. Thanks to letters written by Amerigo Vespucci, the people of Europe became aware of the American continent. In the few years after the publication of these letters, the American region has become widely recognized by Europeans.

These regions called New World by Amerigo Vespucci, today's South American regions. At first, these areas were considered by Vespucci as a part of the Asian continent, but at the other time, it was understood that these lands were a different place. Amerigo Vespucci passed away on February 22, 1512.
